Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala: the most beautiful flags in Latin America according to a global survey

The flag of a country is not just a national symbol, but a representation of its history, culture, and values. Under this premise, the Spanish newspaper "20 Minutos" organized an international contest in which 104 nations participated with the aim of determining which is the most beautiful flag in the world.

The contest, which was held entirely in a virtual format, sparked strong global interest, with more than seven and a half million participants voting over 48 days. In each round, five flags were eliminated until reaching the 10 finalists.

Finally, a flag from Latin America was crowned as the most beautiful in the region, standing out for its striking design and deep meaning.

The most beautiful flag in Latin America is…

With a total of 901,627 points, the flag of Mexico was chosen as the most beautiful in Latin America and the overwhelming favorite among voters. Its combination of colors, symbolism, and history captivated those who participated in the survey.

The second place went to the flag of Peru, which obtained 340,901 points, while the third place was occupied by Guatemala, with 272,541 points.

The contest, which arose from a proposal by a reader of the Spanish media, generated more than 25,000 comments from people who shared their opinions on the symbolism, identity, and beauty of each participating flag.

The meaning behind the Mexican flag

The history of the Mexican flag is deeply linked to the country's independence. Its tricolor design was born on February 24, 1821, when Agustín de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero proclaimed the Plan of Iguala, establishing the principles of independence, unity, and national rights.

The colors that make it up have a special meaning:

  • Green: Represents hope and independence, as well as the fertility of Mexican territory.
  • White: Symbolizes unity and the purity of national ideals, in addition to peace.
  • Red: Represents the blood of the heroes who fought for the country's independence, reminding us of the sacrifices made to achieve freedom.

The coat of arms: the eagle and the serpent, an ancestral symbol

One of the most distinctive elements of the Mexican flag is its national coat of arms, located in the center of the white stripe. It is based on an ancient Aztec legend that tells how the Mexica found the place where they would found their great city, Tenochtitlán (now Mexico City), upon seeing an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent.

This symbol represents strength, resilience, and the connection of the Mexican people with their pre-Hispanic past.

A contest that united millions of people

Beyond the competition, the voting for the most beautiful flag in the world allowed thousands of people to reflect on their roots, their identity, and the value of national symbols.

The virtual event broke geographical and generational barriers, achieving massive participation in a space for dialogue and cultural appreciation.

With this recognition, the flag of Mexico reaffirms its place as one of the most iconic and significant in the world, being an emblem of pride and tradition for millions of people both inside and outside the country.
